George came to Oklahoma Apr 22, 1889, from Clark Co., Kansas with his parents who made the "run for land". Walking barefoo helped herd the cattle from Kansas to Oklahoma. His parents staked a to lot in Kingfisher and at the land drawing there, George sold water for 5 cents a tin cup to men standing in line. [Note: Because the Rockenbach line of oral History speaks Charles' parents and his two brothers, we wonder if either he was not a stowaway, or if all of them were stowaways. I lean to the idea of the former. I think the Rockenbach's left Germany because of Political differences with the ruling parties. L.E.] Elizabeth ("Lizzie") came to Canadian Co. Dec 16, 1889, and grew up on the Rockenbach homestead in t same section as George. George and Lizzie lived west of El Reno where Ella Pearl (Royse) was born Sep 10, 1901, the first of 6 children. They homesteaded in Roger Mills Co., near Reydon, Oklahoma, where Morgan Charles was born Mar 31, 1903. They freighted from Oklahoma City to Cheyenne, raises cattle and grazed them on the prairie, herded them and sometimes fought prairie fires. Later, they traded the farm for property in El Reno. When George's father died in Apr 1904, they moved back to the homestead to help his mother farm. Here, Roy Leonard was born Sept 12, 1905; Hazel May (Estes) was born Apr 17, 1907; and Della Belle (Myska) was born Feb 2, 1909. In 1911, they bought the Lowell Shaw farm and moved, farming both places. They were active in the Oak Chapel Church. In 1919, when 2 of the children were ready to go to highschool, they bought a farm one mile south of El Reno, moving there so the children could walk to school. [The farm northeast of El Reno was about 10 miles from school, the one south of town only 2 miles! Twenty-two descendants graduated from El Reno High School, and 28 descendants still live in the county. Lois Elizabeth was born Nov 20, 1921, and died Sept 3, 1936, from spinal meningitis. George's mother attended to the house while Lizzie helped in the field and ourtdoor chores such a smilking and gardening. They were wheat farmers, had a big orchard and garden, raised chickens, cattle and hogs. The women canned, the men butchered, and they filled the cellar each summer. [The] Women pieced quilts which were lined with white flour sacks. Dresses were made from printed feed sacks. Children and grandchildren were home for Sundays and holidays; Lizzie was a good cook, her table was spread with chicken/noodles, vegetables, wild plum jelley and currant pie. For entertainment, they played games and sang around the organ. Lizzie doctored them with home remedies during sickness. They had homemade ice cream for the 4th of July.
