| 12 | They moved from Kansas to Oklahoma in the late 20's and had a store / service station on route 66 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma - 1927-1930. My dad John E Stafford remembers going to the store and it had glass candy bins. His grandparents would let the grandkids get candy from these bins. Lillie May rode in one of the Oklahoma land runs on horseback but some "ole man" beat her out of it. She was an avid reader and John played the violin. According to family historians John did not work very much after they moved to Washington. Lillie may worked in the dryer sheds with her sister Ida. They moved to Chelan Falls to be near her sister Ida. When they moved from Kansas they got as far as Colorado and left their trailer of household goods. Ralph and Eulalia came along behind them and worked in Colorado until they had enough money to get to Chelan Falls WA. Eulalia told me they had fifty cents when they got to Chelan Falls. They also brought John and Lillie Mays trailer of household goods. She said they had a Model A or T. I have a copy of John Staffords death certificate and it states that his mother's maiden name is Martha Morris and her birthplace is unknown. The information was given by Lillie May Stafford. He died from bronchial pneumonia due to turblerious. He was 69 years old. I also have a copy of Lillie Mays death certificate that says she died from cerebral vascular accident due to antscal vascular disease and megalocolon. She died in a nursing home and was 82 years old. I have a copy of their Marriage Affidavit and Marriage License. Kaye Stafford Schwer John was living in Cassidy, KS in February , 1933. Later in 1933 they moved to Washington state and John built a one-room house where he and Lillie May lived. The house is no longer there. They worked in the fruit canneries. Lillie May got her name from being born with skin "white as a Lillie and in the month of May". According to family sources he was not fond of working and was a gambler and at one time had won a lot of money and property in Kansas. He liked the dog racetrack and liked to play poker. He also carried a gun. John's mother may have been Martha J Sullivan. I could never find a marriage record for Morris but the 1870 census proves she is a Martha. Also Francis Sullivan age 9 is living with Martha and Charles and Matthew, Ellis and Joshua [these three may have been illegitimate] Ralph Lee Stafford | Stafford, John (I026)
