121951 | Young Samuel Nott, whose father had lost his property in a debt case, went off in the winter to become a pedlar. He opened a small trade in New Haven and made enough money to put himself through Yale. Samuel Nott attended Yale College, graduating in 1780 at the age of 27. He was ordained as third pastor of the 2nd Congregational Church in Norwich, CT (called West Farms, now Franklin), on 13 Mar 1782, serving until 1852. He died at 2:00 pm at the parsonage house in Franklin. "The 98th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Nott's birth was observed by a numerous company of Parishioners and friends, at his home in Franklin, Ct., on the 23d of January, 1852. There were 150 persons present, whose overflowing baskets of rich provisions, & c., showed the abiding esteem in which the people hold their venerated pastor. The aged divine, trembling under the blasts of 98 winters, leaning on the arm of his grand-daughter, stood at the end of the long table groaning under the weight of tempting eatables tastefully arranged, and invoked the blessing of God in appropriate terms. He also led in prayer near the close of the pleasant and cheerful interview. The entertainment finally wound up with singing. The Doctor's bodily health is still good, though now the oldest pastor in the Union." Genealogical Notes - Connecticut and Massachusetts by Goodwin p 168. His father, Stephen Nott, lived with him at Franklin in 1781 and died there in 1790. Samuel's house, built in 1782, was still standing in 1935 at Franklin. Franklin CT. Samuel Nott occupied the pulpit for an unbroken period of 70 years, 1782-1852. He died 26 May 1852, aged 98, in the 71st year of his ministry, of burns. | NOTT, Samuel , Rev., Dr. (I12273)
