(Do notconfuse with Jonas Stafford 1775-1852 of Erie County, PA) Researched by Debbie McArdle, [email protected], March,2022 1) The older Jonas Stafford(1775-1852 who married 1st Alma Park & 2nd Amy Slater / Slyter is accounted for in the 1810 census of Peru, Clinton County, NY and the 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses of Erie County, PA and he died there in 1852. Not that he couldn’t have fathered a childout of wedlock, but this does not sound like the Jonas who 'for a considerable time past hath left the county and is now in the Territory of Michigan' as stated by Freelove Upham in her statement to the Erie County, PA Court. Between having children and buying land, the elder Jonas left plenty of tracks in Erie County to indicate he could NOT bethe Jonas who left for Michigan. 2) About 1823 Jonas Stafford married Amy Slater and from then until 1835 they were busy having 7 children. 2) In 1823 a Jonas Stafford appears in the Mackinac County,Michigan voter's list. This is likely the younger Jonas since the elder Jonas is clearly in Erie County, Pennsylvania at this time. (Source: ancestry.com,Michigan, U.S., Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1827-1870) It is my understanding that the Stafford Society, as of March 9,2022, incorrectly shows Jonas (1775-1852) as the father of Martin Stafford. Rather, Martin's father is Jonas (1793-1873), son of Jonathan Stafford and Sarah Anthony. Hopefully their correction will be posted soon. Thayer, administrators of the estate of Charles(?) Sander, deceased, of Fairview Township, Erie County. This deed states Blodgett and Stafford are both of Monroe, Ashtabula County, Ohio. The land's description includes that the landbelonged to Bod Phelps(?) now in possession of John Tagart, one acre, part of atract of land No. 329, formerly owned by Stephen Rumsey and by him deeded toThurston Wells. Witnesses: Miner Hutchinson & Rodolphus Gailick. (Source: Erie County, PA Deed Book B, p441) In Miller's "History of ErieCounty" it says "The principal town in McKean (Township) is Middleboro, incorporated as a borough in 1861. It is in the centre of the township and located directly on the OLD STATE LINE." Middleboro, as we know, is now calledMcKean. This explains the JonasStafford/Ashtabula County, Ohio entry in 1826. Harrison) 1829: 15 November, Melvina Stafford, Jonas & Amy Stafford’s daughter, dies in Erie County, PA. 1831: 17 October, John Wesley Stafford, Jonas & Amy Stafford’s son, is born in Erie County, PA. 1832: 25 July (Filed 7 February 1833) Deed Robert E. Heron formerly of the Borough of Erie and now of Louisville, Kentucky to Jonas Stafford of McKean Township, Erie County; for $300 Heron sells to Stafford 100 acres situated in McKean Township, Erie County, whereon Zacheus O. Joiner formerly resided and which was sold by the Erie County Sheriff to Alexander W.Foster, Esquire as the property of Beriah(?) Willard and for which the said Alexander W. CHRONOLOGICALINFORMATION FOR THE YOUNGER JONAS STAFFORD(1793-1873) APPEARS BELOW: 1793: Jonas Stafford, sonof Jonathan Stafford, is born in Vermont or New York. 1812: A Jonas Stafford,Private, Captain Sperry's Company, New York Militia, War of 1812, received Land Warrant #52097 for 160 acres of land as described: "East half of the SW quarter and the West half of the SE quarter of Section 26, Township 140, , Range 47, District of Lands subject to sale at Detroit, Minnesota, containing 160 acres". Apparently, Jonas Stafford never claimed theland, as in 1876 Ulysses S. Grant deeded the land to Heirs of Alonzo T. Deming,Clay County, Minnesota, filed 16th February 1880, Clay County, Minn. Book E, p607. This surely represents Jonas Stafford (2 Oct 1794 Vermont - 14 Nov 1873 Cleveland, Ohio) who served with theMiller’s 36th Regiment of the New York Militia as a private, as his tombstone is inscribed “Veteran War of 1812”. (Source of patent: One of my antiques clients has the original patentfor this land to her Deming ancestor.) 1814: Sept; Jonas Stafford from New York was paid on this date for his service in the War of 1812. 1823: A Jonas Stafford appears in the Mackinac County, Michigan voter's list. (Source: ancestry.com, Michigan, U.S., Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1827-1870) 1824-1834: This younger Jonas Stafford is MIA. 1824: 16 January; Freelove Upham and Seth Shephardson and had at least one child, Evaline, born 16 Jan1824. This Evaline died in Waterford,PA. in 1913 and this parental information comes from Evaline's death certificate which can be found on ancestry. On the 1830 Waterford, Erie County, PA census there are 6 people livingin Seth Shepardson’s home. He is living 7 houses down from Benjamin Leland, father of Elizabeth Leland who married Henry Clinton Stafford (b1815) who was the son of Edward Stafford. Edward Stafford is the brother of Jonathan (b1771) who married Sarah Anthony and Jonas (b1775) who married Amy Slater. 1827: 23 February; There is a death certificate for a George W. Dougherty, born 23 Feb 1827, born in Erie PA to George V. Dougherty (born PA) and Freelove Upham (born Boston, MA). He died in 1908 in Allegheny County, PA. (Source: ancestry.com) ~1833: I discovered sometime around 2010 during a visit to the Erie County, PA Courthouse that onepage relating to Martin Stafford has been incorrectly attached to the Probate file for Stephen Stafford. It is an undated claim by Martin's mother, Freelove Upham, stating that Martin's father is Jonas Stafford and that Martin is now a 10-year-old boy. Freelove further states that Jonas 'for a considerable time past hath left the county and is now in the Territory of Michigan'. She asks that a guardian be appointed. Although no date is given, the fact that it mentions the Michigan Territory indicates this document would date to pre-1837. Bonnie Guilford's notes indicate Martin was born in 1813, which would date this document to 1823. However, Bonnie Guilford's notes indicate Jonas the named father. I have seen the original document and it clearly shows Jonas! (Source: Erie County, PA Wills: Stephen Stafford #33480) 1834: Jonas Stafford married Louisa Mead - so say researchers, but I cannot find any evidence of marriage date or place. 1840: Miller vs. Jonas Stafford, Title: Early Court Cases, LG1; Location: HPC - LG 1 - Local Government Manuscript Collection; Description: Scattered Sandusky County court cases, 1820-1851 (Source: ancestry.com; Order file from - Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center; Spiegel Grove, Fremont, Ohio) 1841: 12 August, Jonas Stafford of New York married Lucy Fish in Groton, Connecticut 1873: Jonas Stafford(1793-1873), husband of Lucy Fish Stafford, is buried in the same cemetery as other kin of Martin Stafford; Woodland Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County,Ohio.
