15562 | Caldwell Query Stafford HARRISBURG -- Mr. Stafford, age 94, quietly left this earth on Tuesday, March 25, 2008. He passed away at his home with his wife of 59 years at his side. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 4:00 PM Friday, March 28, 2008 at Harrisburg Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 3:00 PM in the fellowship hall at Harrisburg Presbyterian Church, prior to the service. Military rights conducted by NC Honors Guard at graveside. A lifelong resident of Harrisburg, he was born July 26, 1913 at his childhood home in Harrisburg, the second of six children to Zeb Mack Stafford and Lula Mae Barbee Stafford. A family with ancestry dated to the 1700s in the Harrisburg area, his roots were firmly planted. Caldwell grew up an avid athlete and sportsman. He and his siblings designed and constructed their own clay tennis court, the first in the area. He played both tennis and baseball with a passion. Fishing at the beach each year was a must. NASCAR fan...of course! He was a quiet hero of World War II. The bronze star was awarded to him as a result of a lone mission in which he dealt with both enemy and sometimes friendly fire, something he never spoke of until his later years. In the thirty seventh infantry division, he served in Guadalcanal and Bougainville as well as other island locales. He met a young teacher who was staying in his mother's boarding house when he came home from the War. That teacher, Catherine Wilson, became not only his wife, but also his life long partner; friend and companion. Caldwell was no stranger to working hard and the rewards of a job well done. From building their home of 45 years himself, to any mechanical or improvement project that came along. No need to call anyone, whatever it was, he could fix it, design it and build it. A man strongly devoted to family and friends, with the patience and kindness most of us could only dream of having, he was a quiet hero to his family as well. He is survived by wife, Catherine Wilson Stafford; his daughter, Cathie Stafford; his son, Howard Stafford and his wife, Susan Howie Stafford; and daughter, Daphne Stafford Williams and her husband, Jeff Williams. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Daniel Stafford and his wife, Karen Denton Stafford, Lisa Stafford, Devon Williams and Mark Williams. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Oglesby and Mildred McCachren. | STAFFORD, Caldwell Query (I82307)
