387 | NOTE: Katherine was largely left on her own due to James's travels to maintain income. Letters indicate she was very loved, and instilled discipline and religion to the children. It seems she was a devout Catholic and made sure many of their children were baptised. It is interesting to note that upon moving to Aurora, the children became Probationers at the First Methodist Church of Aurora. Legend tells us that Kateherine told their oldest girl Alice, to go to the nearest and largest available church since a Catholic church was not nearby. Alice came upon the Methodist Church, and the rest is history. However, Jim Jr. and I have found records indicating a Catholic Church existed in Aurora at the time. This can potentially be explained by the fact that James F. and Katherine had disagreements over religion. My experience with my father and mother involve only exposures to the Methodist Church. Perhaps this gives us some evidence of James F's religion. Family letters tell us that Katherine so loved her daughter Kate, that she died of a broken heart within two years of Kate's death while giving birth. | DRISCOLL, Katherine E. (I47181)
