CONFEDERATE NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS
44th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry
44th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in March, 1862, at Ca mp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. Its companies were recruited in t he counties of Granville, Edgecombe, Pitt, Chatham, Montgomery, Beaufor t, and Franklin. It served in the Department of North Carolina, then was a ssigned to General Pettigrrew's, Kirkland's, and MacRae's Brigade, Ar my of Northern Virginia. En route to Gettysburg the 44th stayed at Hanov er Junction to guard the railroads. Later it fought at Bristoe, The Wilder ness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. It was then involved in the Petersbu rg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. The regime nt reported 23 killed and 63 wounded at Bristoe, sustained heavy loss es at The Wilderness and in front of Petersburg, and surrendered 8 office rs and 74 men on April 9, 1865. It commanders were Colonels G.B. Singelta ry and T.C. Singeltary; Lieutenant Colonels Richard C. Cotton**, Elisha Cr omwell, and Tazewell L. Hargrove, and Major Charles M. Stedman.

CONFEDERATE NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS
44th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry
44th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in March, 1862, at Ca mp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. Its companies were recruited in t he counties of Granville, Edgecombe, Pitt, Chatham, Montgomery, Beaufor t, and Franklin. It served in the Department of North Carolina, then was a ssigned to General Pettigrrew's, Kirkland's, and MacRae's Brigade, Ar my of Northern Virginia. En route to Gettysburg the 44th stayed at Hanov er Junction to guard the railroads. Later it fought at Bristoe, The Wilder ness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. It was then involved in the Petersbu rg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. The regime nt reported 23 killed and 63 wounded at Bristoe, sustained heavy loss es at The Wilderness and in front of Petersburg, and surrendered 8 office rs and 74 men on April 9, 1865. It commanders were Colonels G.B. Singelta ry and T.C. Singeltary; Lieutenant Colonels Richard C. Cotton**, Elisha Cr omwell, and Tazewell L. Hargrove, and Major Charles M. Stedman.

Confederate solder as documented in "36th Virginia Infantry" by J.L. Scott. Stafford, Adam F: Company I; enlisted April 16, 1862 in Giles County. Present until captured at Piedmont, June 5, 1864. POW Camp Morton. Died from inflamed lungs, April 30, 1865. Buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, grave #1552.

"Up the Years from Buffalo" by Garland Reid Stafford referrences Fleming Stafford as follows: Died of Pneumonia as a POW in Chillicothe, Ohio. At this time I do not know if Camp Morton and Chillicothe, Ohio are related.
