97717 | Marjorie taught school after graduating from State Teachers College(Currently University of Northern Iowa) at Cedar Falls,Iowa. She started at Northboro in 1927 teaching 5th & 6th grades for two years, then moved to Clarinda Public Schools for the 1929-30 school year, teaching 6th grade. After marrying Garold Rowland on August 6,1930 she taught 5th & 6th grades at College Springs Schools during the 1930-31 school year. Marjories children started arriving in 1933 when Donald Lee arrived on October 28th.,with the birth of four sons this ended her teaching as she took on the job as mother. The following are Marjories memories regarding her families Sunday events: I recall that our preparations for Sunday School and church began on Saturday evening when the galvanized wash tub was brought into the kitchen,we had no bathroom, and everyone had their bath. Our shoes were polished and clean clothes made ready. We always enjoyed the small cards bearing a colored picture and a scripture and story pertaining to that days lesson. These were real treasures I wish I had kept a few. After Sunday dinner we were allowed to read and take naps but it mostly was observed as a day of rest. Often we gathered about the organ for good song feasts. I think we all love signing and good music. Only at chore time did we get outside to let out some of our pep. I don't recall ever thinking that we didn't want to go to Sunday school and church. We went as a family. In those days our church was a cherished spot to meet friends, both young and old. As we married and established our own homes we carried on the tradition of having religion being the important thing in our lives and we see this pattern being carried on in the families of our children and grandchildren.I think I have taught Sunday school since I started public school teaching until a stroke took me out of action in 1982. My signing voice was stilled by the stroke so I can no longer sing in the choir, but I can still whistle, and will always enjoy good music.
