Matthew was the third son of John and Nancy and grew up in Daviess County IN. His wife Hannah Alford, of Alfordsville IN, was the daughter of James [Jake] Alford Jr, born December 21 1791 in Giles Co VA and Hannah Baker, born 1791 in VA and died in 1875 in Peru Kansas. James and Hannah B. were married in 1813. He must have been prominent in starting the town.

In 1868 they journeyed to Neosha County Kansas, near Leanna which is East of Chanute. In the spring of 1880 Matthew and Hannah bought a home north of Peru, Kansas. Matthew and his fathers [John] land joined each other. Both Matthew and his father John were stricken with the dreaded disease, tuberculosis. Matthew died November 20 1883 in KS and left Hannah with four children. In the 1900 KS census only nine out of the ten are listed. They were members of the Peru Christian Church. Ralph Lee Stafford

We visited Alfordsville IN [1993] where Hanna Alford and Matthew Stafford were married right after the Civil War. They settled on the headwaters of Haw Creek, IN. In 1868, with several families, friends and relatives they left for the west. They did this in covered wagons and landed in Neoshe County, Kansas, near Leanna and a few miles north and east of Chanute in July 1868. They journeyed southward in the spring of 1880.

Several Civil War veterans from that area came to Kansas because of land prices etc. Am wondering where your Charles was after the war? My mother Linnie Blanche, was the youngest of nine children and Matthew, age 46 died from war health problems [tuberculosis] when she was two years old. My mother died 28 years ago and I was born in their middle age.

We do have Matthew's Civil War records and have a physical description of him. He had brown hair, 5'7 ¼" tall, and hazel eyes. He enlisted October 24 1862 from Terre Haute IN but was living in Alfordsville. He was in Co C 14 Regiment of the Indiana Infantry Volunteers. He may have been a prisoner for some time. Hannah got his civil war pension in 1916. We also visited where he and Hannah are buried in the Peru Kansas cemetery. Hannah died in her home May 14 1922 at age 84.
