  Military Service World War II Date 1941-1945 Location Japanese Theatre Added by graygal53g on 8 Nov 2008 Clement was in the Army 24th Infantry Division. He was a rifle marksman. He trained in Hawaii with 500 other infantry men to get in the Rangers and he was 2nd of 500 at the end of his training. He earned $24/mo when he entered the service. He had 5 Bronze Stars for major military campaigns in the Phillipines; Papua New Guinea, Leyte, Luzonne, Mindanao, Lingayen. Clement wrote home asking for a dagger and a pistol because they could't get enough weapons to fight the war. The Rangers (about 30 men) were sent on a reconnaissance mission behind Japanese lines and Clement alone returned. He said that at night when they were bivoacked and the grass rustled, they didn't know if it was a monitor lizzard or the Japanese coming close by. When he returned home, his hands were registered as lethal weapons as in the Rangers, he was trained to kill with his bare hands, as well as with a knife or gun. You would think a man with a service record such as this and decorated would receive a military funeral with a 21 gun salute and a veteran's grave marker, but this was not the case with Clement. He had a simple ceremony attended by family and friends in Carmel, CA.
