Benjamin Franklin Hopgood and his wife Ellen (Ella) Farely Hopgood mov
ed to El Centro California from Kentucky. They and their two daughters, Me
ota and Ethel Lynn, are mentioned in the 1920 census. In either Jan., Feb
., or March of 1922 the two sisters married two brothers residing there. T
heir names were Cecil H. Aynesand Sammy J. Aynes.
(However, the marriage records in El Centro are all jumbledup. It shows e
ach girl marrying some unknown person and the ages are all wrong! Apparent
ly, their current records are not the actual documents, but hand copied bo
oks. The originals were all burned and the person who copied these origin
al documents really messed up!)
Cecil and Meota Aynes had one daughter,Betty Jane Aynes, born October 1
5, 1922. Sammy and Ethel also had one daughter, Beverly June Aynes, born A
ugust 2, 1927.
Meota and Cecil divorced sometime in the 30's. I do not know the date. I t
hink they were living in Los Angeles at the time, however, I am not sur
e. Meota may or may not have kept the last name of Aynes. She may have go
ne back to the name Hopgood, or she may haveremarried later. Anyway, s
he later gave birth to a son. She wanted to give him up for adoption and E
thel and Sammy were seriously considering adopting him - I think someti
me around 1935. However, because they were very poor they decided again
st adopting the little boy. Two years later, Sammy died suddenly of a mass
ive heart attack and times were especially hard for Ethel and young Beverl
y. Ethel remarried several years later and Beverly married Jack Davis in 1
945.
Anyone with information concerning Meota, Cecil or the young son whowas a
dopted, please contact C. Rising.
