  James Armistead Guthrie Churchill was a cabinet maker by the age of 14. He was living in the household of his married sister Catherine Malinda Churchill in 1850. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in the army of the C.S.A. He served in Company F of the 1st Kentucky Brigade under General Seth Maxwell Barton untilhis discharge on May 14, 1862. However, he reenlisted in the C.S.A. after which time he served under Generals Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson and Joseph Eggleston Johnston and participated in the following battles: Seven Pines (Fair Oaks), VA, May 31-June 1, 1862; Cold Harbor (Gaine's Mill, Chickahominy), VA, June 27, 1862; Missionary Ridge, TN, September 22, 1863; and Nashville, TN, December 15-16, 1864. Sometime near the end of the war he was captured and imprisoned for five months in the Alton Penitentiary in Alton, IL and also for three months at Johnson Island, OH. After the war James returned to Kentucky, settling near Murray in Calloway Co., KY to take up farming. James Armistead Guthrie Churchill and his wife Martha Jane Curd made their home in Murray, KY where during the last years of his life he was a carpenter. They were the parents of 12 children of which 11 were found.
