- Gilla Ann Allen and her husband, William Armistead Churchill, made their
home on the Hodgenville, Kentucky farm of his mother where he grew up. The
tombstone of Gilla Anna Allen is etched with the following inscription:
"Death's seal is set upon my brow, O'er me the gathering shadows come,
Heaven's zephyr's play round me now, And woo me to my far off home. Now
new such scenes and longer dwell below Loved husband, children, dear
farewell I go."
These lines were most likely written by Eliza LaRue Allen, the older
sister of Gilla Anna Allen. Eliza LaRue Allen was famed throughout Larue
County, Kentucky as the blind poet who wrote about members of her family
as well as a poem about the old Nolynn Baptist Church outside Hodgenville,
Kentucky.
