- After attending school and working for awhile as a typesetter in
Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Roy Pusey Churchill entred the jewelry business
with his father, Virgil Henry Churchill, and remained there no later than
1911 when he was found to be residing in Santa Barbara, California. A few
years later he joined the US Navy, after which time he saw active duty in
World War I. Prior to that Roy Pusey Churchill had served in the
Spanish-American War of 1898 at the age of 19 years old. This was most
likely while he was still residing in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. After
World War I he went to California in 1921 either to establish or work for
"The Gem Shop" in Santa Barbara. In an event, he eventually established
"Churchll's Jewelers" which is located at 1015 State Street and is
currently owned and operated by Richard M. Kern, who went to work for Roy
Pusey Chruchill as an employee/protege in 1934. In addition to operating
the jewelry business, Roy Pusey Churchill was known to have been a
professional writer, haveing some of his stories purchased and printed by
adventure magazines of his day.
