In the 1870 & 1880 census, he is recorded as being born in 1869; but in19
00, his birth is given as Oct 1867.
Since his name is given as John E. Long in the 1900 census, a search of t
he 1910 turns up John E. Long, age 40, married to Manda, a widow with sev
en children of her own, and a daughter Ethel,age 1 & 6 months. Ethel's l
ast name is written as Long, but the others are given a different name th
at is practically illegible on teh census.
Manda told the 1910 census she had given birth to 8 children, and 7 were l
iving; however, there are 8 children in the household that appear to be he
rs. She and John had been married for 3 years, so Ethel is almost definit
ely theirs together.
Incidentally, a John S. Long, born 1868, is married to window Amanda Eva
ns in the same census!
