- From Cindy Mease , Hagerstown, MD: "My mother-in-law is a LONG, born in Cu
mberland, Allegany Co., MD. Her father was Charles S. LONG, b. April 190
0, d. July 1948, in Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD. Charles S. LONG is the s
on of Charles A. LONG, b. ca. Feb 1878 in WV, d. unknown, and Ida May HAGE
R, b. Apr. 1878 in MD, d. unknown. In the 1910 Census for Allegany Co., M
D, in ED #4 (partof) Cumberland Canal, excluding Cumberland City, Charl
es A. LONG is living at 164 Virginia Avenue with his wife Ida M., his so
n, Charles S., who is age 11, along with 5 other children, a boarder, a
nd his mother-in-law, Eveline HAGER, who is age 58, born in Virginia (whi
ch would make
her birth year about 1852). In the 1900 Census for Allegany Co., MD, ED #1
24, All Townships, Sheet 188A, I submit that there is an error made by t
he census taker. I submit that, for whatever reason, the census taker docu
mented Charles A. LONG as CharlesADAM, b. Feb. 1878 in WV, living on Fl
at Street with his wife, Ida May HAGER, b. Apr. 1878 in MD, son Charl
es E. (possibly Charles S.?), b. in Apr. 1900 in MD, and Everline HAGER, w
idow, b. March 1852 in WV. The census indicates that Charles and Ida
May, when asked how many years they had been in Maryland, said 0 yea
rs in Maryland."
Ida May HAGER is shown in the 1880 Census for Allegany County. She, her pa
rents, and older brother are living on Cumberland Street in the election d
istrict that comprises the River. Interestingly, the last name is spell
ed HAGAR. Ida May is listed as age 5 and her brother, age 6.
