Special Recognition Award
Harvey J. Neufeld '54
Harvey J. Neufeld '54 will receive the 1998 Special Recognition Award f
or 28 yearsof service to the PLU community.
Neufeld earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Pacific Lutheran C
ollege in 1954 and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Lutheran Theologic
al Seminary, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1957. He went onto earn a certif
icate of graduate studies from Vancouver School of Theology in 1976 a
nd a Master of Divinity from Lutheran Theological Seminary, Saskatoo
n, in 1977.
After serving as pastor in a Canadian church and as director ofdeve
lopment at Camrose Lutheran College, Neufeld came to PLU to serve as direc
tor of church relations in 1965. During this time, he also served as direc
tor of Lutheran Ingathering for Edu-cation. Neufeld left PLU in 1969 to se
rve as a pastor in Ocean Shores, Wash., returning in 1971 to con-tinue h
is total of 28 years of service to the university.
Neufeld served several roles during his tenure at PLU. He was direct
or of alumni from 1971 to 1973, executive director of collegium and chur
ch relations from 1974 to 1986 and vice president of church relations fr
om 1986 until his retirement in 1994.
For 10 years, Neufeld served as producer and host of "Morning Prayer
," a weekly radio program on KPLU. Probably best known and most belov
ed is Neufeld's column, "Travelin' with Harv," that appeared in Scene f
or 17 years beginning in 1971.
His columns often reflected his personal experiences while out on t
he road and included a larger spiritual, social or moral context. A collec
tion of these columns has been published in Neufeld's book, "Travelin' wi
th Harv: Essays andReflections." In addition, Neufeld is co-editor and pu
blisher of three bookswritten by PLU alumni.
Harvey and his wife, Carol '55, live in Steilacoom, Wash. They ha
ve four children -- Gregory, Brian '80, '84, Stephen and Elizabeth '82.
