Arrived in NZ around 1903, as deck cargo on unknown ship.
In 1917 occupation given as Bushfaller, employer E.D. Hoult, Cape Runaway. ( Army enlistment records)
53627 RFM A. DAIN, Rifle Brigade WW1. Enlisted in Gisborne , served 181 days in NZ, 398 days overseas.
Arrived France 9/11/1917, saw action at Etaples. Evacuated to hospital, London 18/11/17 . Back to Etaples 10/12/17,, but classified category C, unfit for front line action., so worked on convoy duty. Evacuated to London again 20 /1/1918, classified as unfit for active duty 6th March and returned to NZ on ship Remuera 14/3/18. (Army records)
Arthur and Ida eloped to Auckland to marry. She took ship for Auckland to ostensibly stay with her aunt. He borrowed a horse and rode to Te Kaha where he boarded the ship and they married in Auckland.
In the depression worked with pick and shovel on the construction of the Waioeka Gorge living in a hut there during the week and walking back to town for the weekend. He had a large garden there that he worked on in the evenings and would carry kerosine tins full of vegetables back to town with him.
At times worked as a porter in the Opotiki Hotel.
