Dorothy C. Stafford, a homemaker and former gift shop owner, died of heart failure Wednesday at Pickersgill Retirement Community. She was 100.
She was born Dorothy Causey in Baltimore and raised in Govans. She was a 1922 graduate of Towson High School and the Maryland Institute College of Art. She taught for several years at the old Towson Normal School before her 1927 marriage to Edward Edwards Stafford, a landscape contractor and cattle breeder. He died in 1974.
The couple lived at a home in Pinehurst and at their farm in White Hall, Baltimore County, which they purchased in 1941.
During the 1950s and 1960s, she owned the Valley Mart, a gift and garden establishment on Falls Road in Bare Hills. She was also a longtime volunteer at Keswick Multi-Care Center.
Mrs. Stafford, who moved to Pickersgill about 12 years ago, remained active until the end of her life.
"She didn't smoke and only had an occasional glass of wine. She always ate properly and had good genes," said a daughter, Dorothy Stafford Peagler of Knoxville, Tenn.
Mrs. Stafford enjoyed writing letters to family members, cooking and dancing.
She was a member of the Baltimore Country Club for 50 years before resigning at 98, and she was also a member of the Woman's Club of Roland Park.
Mrs. Stafford was a longtime member of University Baptist Church, 3501 N. Charles St., where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
Survivors include another daughter, Susan Stafford Trew of Delano, Ky.; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
