  Edward and Melissa Added by dresslerus on 31 Jan 2009 Edward E Stafford and Melissa Hosford are married on July 8 1879. Melissa's Father is from Connecticut and her Mother is from Ireland. For some reason they register the marriage in 2 counties Adams and Columbia counties. Probably just to make sure or to make their parents sure that they were not living in sin. The 1880 census has them living in Dell Prairie, Wisconsin on a farm. From there they head west to North Dakota. This is truly uncivilized pioneer country compared to Wisconsin. They settle in an area just north of Fargo and yes probably talked funny too. The 1885 Dakota Territory census has them in Cass County with 7 month old Seymour and a servant girl named Ellen Bristol. American settlement of the Northern Plains commenced in earnest after 1861, when Dakota Territory was organized by Congress. Surveyors went out to survey the land and get a picture of what was out there. Significant immigration commenced when the westbound Northern Pacific Railway built to the Missouri River in 1872 and 1873. Along and near its line, new towns sprang up to serve the settlers, the track laying crews, along with other sometimes rowdy frontier citizens. Fargo and Bismarck Dakota, for example, both began as rough-and-tumble railroad communities. Spurred by the 1862 Federal Homestead Law, farming settlement developed gradually after the first claim west of the Red River was filed in 1868. In 1876, units of the 7th Cavalry commanded by Lt. Col. George A. Custer left Fort Abraham Lincoln near Bismarck to search for Dakota Sioux who had refused confinement on reservations. A great settlement "boom" in northern Dakota occurred between 1879 and 1886. During those years, over 100,000 people entered the Dakota Territory. The majorities were homesteaders, like Edward and Melissa. By 1887 Melissa dies at the age of only 28. There is a multitude of ways to die in this frontier land.
