  From "The Stone Legacy", written by his son Robert (Bob) Phillips Stone: In Europe, Dr. Stone ran front-line hospitals wherever the First Canadian Division fought, including the battles of Ypres, Vimy Ridge and others. (He told me many years later that he became so revolted and repulsed by the senseless carnage and slaughter that he regretted being a doctor and vowed to stop being one as soon as he could. His actions during the second Battle of Ypres earned him a most distinguished decoration, a Companion of St. Michael and St. George, which was pinned onto his tunic by none other than King George V of England.
