- It appears that Daisie Fritz may have erred again.
I have been revisiting the info she compiled on the Hurlbut line, and "Houston, we have a problem."
1. Daisie claims that John Hurlbut, b. 1757, Berlin, CT was the son of James Hurlbut and Abigail Hart. James and Abigail did have a son, John, b. abt 1756 in Farmington, CT. Daisie appears to be correct.
2. Daisie claims that John Hurlbut married Zillah Southwick October 26, 1786 in Williamstown, MA. She says John was a Revolutionary War Vet (1780), and that Zillah was b. abt 1767. John Hurlbut DID marry Zillah Southwick on the date Daisie cites, and there is a John Hurlbut (1760-1815 or 13) buried in Village Cemetery, Palmyra, NY listed among the Revolutionary War Patriots In and Around Ontario County, NY. Daisie appears to be right again.
3. Daisie then claims that John and Zillah had a son, Joseph. Joseph was b. September 15, 1787 in N. Adams, MA, and was married twice. First, he married Phila Sawyer June 22, 1809. Second, he married Maria Shurtleff October 30, 1822. Maria was b. November 2, 1802 in Verona, NY. Joseph Hurlbut d. April 16, 1861, Manchester, NY, and Maria d. October 1, 1862, also in Manchester. Joseph and Maria had a daughter, Nancy Hurlburt (Hurlbut), who married Dr. John Stafford, etc., etc. We assume that Daisie confirmed this part from her mother, Nancy. Nancy must have known who her own parents were.
It all seems to fit--except:
1. The John Hulburt who married Zillah Southwick is NOT the son of James Hulburt and Abigail Hart. He is the son of Gamaliel Hulburt and Jerusha Drinkwater. He was b. March 6, 1760, New Milford, CT. His d. is listed in the Hulburt database as November 14, 1824.
2. John Hulburt and Zillah Southwick did NOT have a son named Joseph, and even if they did, he couldn't have been born on September 15, 1787. These are the children of John Hurlbut and Zillah Southwick:
a) Lucretia Hurlbut, b.Nov 4, 1787 (two months after Joseph!)
b) Giles J. Hulburt, b. 1789
c) Chauncey Hulburt, b. November 8, 1791
d) Sheldon Hulburt, b. February 22, 1794
e) Alvah Hulburt, b. January 9, 1799
f) Amerilles Hulburt, b. November 3, 1803
g) Parmelia Hulburt, b. March 5, 1804
h) Hannah Hulburt, b. October 1, 1805
I think Daisie got her Johns mixed up (if you will pardon the expression). It is also possible that there may be other Hulburts (Hurlburts). According to the Hulburt website, the name can be spelled 14 different ways, and spelling it one way doesn't always include all the others. What a pain.
