She was born April 13, 1918, in Clay County to the late William Harvey and Roxie Rush Strong. Mrs. Bownes was a homemaker and a member of Gainesboro First Baptist Church. Her family includes her husband, Carl J. Bownes of Gainesboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Billy Joe and Nancy Stafford of Gainesboro; two grandchildren, Vicky Salyer and William Thomas Stafford, both of Gainesboro; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Salyer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, LEX STAFFORD; her second husband,; Fred Stafford; a stepson, James Stafford; six brothers, Joe, Haskell, Bethel, Amos, Willie Jay and Wilbert Strong; and two sisters, Hattie Moss and her twin, Lola Strong. . . .
