Nella E. Coons, 89, of Alexandria and formerly of Elwood passed away on Feb. 17, 2012 at the Alexandria Care Center in Alexandria following an extended illness.
She was born on June 16, 1922 to Lee and Daisy (Stafford) Stewart in Jackson County, Tenn.
On June 18, 1941, Nella married John Coons. He passed away on March 7, 1984.
She was retired from Williams Sandwich Shop in Elwood. Nella loved quilting and gardening. She was once featured in the Elwood Call Leader for her wonderful flower garden she had at her home.
Nella is survived by her three daughters, Annette Crouch of Kokomo, Mae (Rodney) Padfield of Greentown and Wanda Shockley of Kokomo; two sons , Jeff (Cindy) Coons of Elwood and Joe Coons of Kokomo; a brother, Comer (Wilma) Stewart of California; fourteen grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by father, Lee Stewart; mother, Daisy (Stafford) Stewart;l her husband, John Coons; four daughters, Judy Edith Coons, Barbara Coons, Joyce Coons and Marie Shields; a son, John Coons Jr.; two brothers, Ernest and Winters Stewart; two sisters, Mary Hardebeck and Edna Stafford; and three grandson, Ernest Johnson, Joe Harris and Brandon Coons.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood. The Rev. Mike Hershey will be officiating. Burial will be in Elwood City Cemetery.
