Mr. John T. McNamee, well known resident of LaGrange and a person active in the civic and religious activities of the community, died Friday evening, June 14, 2002, at the Methodist Hospital of Fayette in Somerville. He was 80 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 A.M. Monday, June 17th at the LaGrange United Methodist Church with Rev.Gordon Henderson, interim Pastor of the church, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Tom Powell of Camden, Tennessee, former Pastor of the church. Interment was in the LaGrange Cemetery. Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. McNamee was born August 8, 1921, in LaGrange, the son of the late John Theodore McNamee and the late Katie Mae Stafford McNamee, early residents of the LaGrange area. He attended local schools and was a graduate of the Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Mr. McNamee served as a Captain in the United States Air Force during World War II and served as a pilot, flying missions in China, during this period. He was married October 15, 1949 to the former June Goodrich of Kansas City, Missouri. Mrs. McNamee also served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and preceded Mr. McNamee in death January 5, 1998. Mr. McNamee was a career person with the National Shoe Company and served as a sales representative for the company for over 36 years before his retirement 15 years ago. He was a former resident of Texas for much of his sales career and was a resident of Collierville before returning to LaGrange in 1988 after his retirement. A person who enjoyed laughter and friends, Mr. McNamee was a well known figure in LaGrange area where he served his community in various church and civic activities. He was a devoted member of the LaGrange United Methodist Church where he served on the nomination and finance committees. He also served as a committee member of the LaGrange Cemetery Association. Often referred to as the "Tomato Man", Mr. McNamee enjoyed raising homegrown tomatoes and sharing his harvest with his many friends and family members. he enjoyed fishing and and hunting in earlier years and was known for is love of animals with a special concern for his two pet dogs. Mr. McNamee will be remembered as a spiritual person who was a true southern Christian gentleman. He was a patriotic person who loved his community, his family and his country. Mr. McNamee was the last member of his immediate family and is survived by a number of cousins, including two double first cousins, Mrs. Ola Scott Borum of Rossville and Mrs. Agnes Ozier of Somerville. Active casketbearers were Stafford McNamee, Martin Michael, Sr., Calvin Ozier, Karl Rhea Jr., and William Rhea. Honorary casketbearers were Bill Cowan and Karl Rhea, Sr. The family requests that memorials be made to the LaGrange Cemetery Association for the LaGrange United Methodist Church.
