Death of woman laid to beating
Picher woman dies several days after alleged fight at Tulsa.
Picher, OK, Feb. 10--Mrs. Sophie Asher, 43 years old, Picher woman, died at 2 O'clock this afternoon at
the home of her Mother, Mrs. Sarah McDowell, 722 West seventh street, from injuries she is alleged to hanve received in being "beaten up" in a fight at Tulsa February 1.
Dr. Benjamin W. Ralston of Commerce, County physician, who attended the woman twice preceding her death, signed the death certificate and assigned her cause of death due to internal injuries received in being beaten up.
Beaten from "Head to foot"
Mrs. Asher was described as having been beaten from "Head to foot." Internal injuries resulted from being stomped in the abdomen, it was alleged. She also suffered a skull laceration six inches long which had been closed with horse hair.
Mrs. Asher was brought to her Mother's home Friday night, February 5, and her condition had been critical since then.
Constable O. S. Jennings and Harley Jennings, Chief of Police questioned Mrs. Asher yesterday afternoon. According to the officers, she named Jack Hughes and his sister, Edna Hughes, who reside in west Tulsa, as her alleged assailants. Authorities at Tulsa will be notified of the death, the officers said, and a further investigation made surrounding circumstances of this case.
According to Mrs. Asher's story as related by officers, she had been visiting at the home of Edna Hughes. The night before the alleged fight in which she received the fatal injuries. She had played a guitar accompaniment at a dance, earning approximately $3. The next day the Hughes family asked Mrs. Asher for the money she had earned to purchase fuel. Mrs. Asher, officers said she told them, refused to give them the money and a fight started.
Struck by gun barrel.
Jack Hughes, according to the story, struck Mrs. Asher over the head with a sea shell ornament and Edna Hughes struck her with a gun barrel, inflicting injuries to her body and leg. It was not explained who stomped her.
Mrs. Asher told officers she remained at the Hughes home until last Friday, when Edna Hughes and a second man brought her to her Mother's home in Picher.
Besides her Mother, she is survived by a half brother, Louis McDowell, and a half sister, Mrs. Clarissa Wilhite, both of Picher.
No Funeral plans have been made.
