William John Acklin, passed away, Aug. 14, 2004. He was born April 29, 1916, to William and Lena (Dula) Acklin. He was a grandson of the Nevada Pioneers. He spent his childhood growing up on the Dula Ranch in Rainbow Canyon, moving into Caliente during his teenage years. Attending high school in Alamo living with his aunt and uncle Joe and Margie Steele helping on the dairy farm. He cowboyed on the Conway and Ryan Ranch, worked for Gottfredsons store, Blue Front, and on his 21st birthday, he went to work for the Mercy's at the Northern Bar. He signed up with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1941. In 1944, William married Roberta Hyde in Pioche. They moved to Las Vegas with the railroad and raised their family. He retired from the railroad in the early 70's. He enjoyed sharing his and his brothers childhood experiences growing up as best friends with his family, through countless stories of Caliente and Rainbow Canyon. Even though he left Caliente in 1941, his heart always remained there. He spent a lot of time with his son and daughter in Caliente the last five years of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Lean Bell (Dula) Acklin; wife, Roberta Lea (Hyde) Acklin; son, John Robert Acklin; and brother, Thomas Edwin Acklin. He is survived by his son, Thomas Charles Acklin; daughter, Vickie Sue (John) Petrie; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Grandpa, our memories together will forever be cherished in our hearts.
