Martha Compton, 78, of Myrtle Beach died Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
She was born Jan. 18, 1918, in Worthville, Ky., a daughter of the late William and Ella K. Steger Stafford.
Mrs. Compton was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church and the Seymour Sunday School class. She served as association WMU officer and was clerk of Waccamaw Baptist Association for 12 years.
She was one of the first female members of the S.C. Baptist Convention general board and was a past president of the S.C. Baptist Pastor's Wives. She moved to Myrtle Beach with her husband Dr. Carl Compton, who was pastor ofFirst Baptist Church from 1949 to 1987.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Carl E. Compton of Myrtle Beach; three sons, Keith Compton of Myrtle Beach, Carl Compton of Rock Hill, and Charles Compton of Bennettsville; a daughter, Kittilee Hanna of Myrtle Beach; a sister, Minnie Jones of Louisville, Ky., and eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at McMillan-Small Funeral Home.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery Mausoleum.
