Note: Major in the Canadian Field Artillery
On December 1, 1915 he enlisted with the 39th Battery 10th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery CEF in Lethbridge. He was placed in command of the Battery until his death. He arrived in England on March 13, 1916, until embarking for France on May 13, 1916. Major Stafford served at the front lines with the 39th Battery 10th Brigade for approximately one year - seeing action at several key battles. On October 31, 1916 while at the Somme, he was severely wounded, recovered and returned to the front lines. He was on command at Vimy Ridge. On June 24, 1917 Major Stafford was hit by a German shell and killed instantly. He was laid to rest at Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery near Pas-de-Calais, France. He was awarded the Victory Medal and British War Medal. His wife Mary, received the memorial Cross and death plaque in honor of her husband.
