Obituary
John Leonard Spears, Jr., was born on July 11, 1915 at River, KY to John L. and Dora Stafford Spears, their fourth child and only son. He departed this life on May 16, 1994. He is survived by his wife, Eunice Daniel Spears, two children, John L. Spears, III, of Louisville, KY and Dora Sue Spears Whitt of Paintsville; three grandchildren, Lisa Spears Mullins, Marc C. Whitt, and Amy Spears Metz; three great grandchildren, John David Metz, Emily Marie Whitt and Elizabeth Ann Whitt and a sister, Edna Maye Brownell of Bremerton, WA. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert E. Whitt. He was a member of the Paintsville United Baptist Church since February 1933 over 60 years. He had also been a deacon since March 1950. John had served the church as a member and deacon faithful till two years ago when his health prevented him from attending. Known as Johnny and John Leonard to friends and family, he grew up in Paintsville and lived there all his life, except for the last two years spent in Louisville with his son and daughter-in-law who cared for him. For 39 years he owned and operated a service station in the center town. He opened it when it was new, and fittingly, the station was torn down when he retired. His reputation was impeccable. His life defined honestly, loyalty and integrity. In his illness he made many new friends. They deemed him an inspiration, because of his attitude, his approach to life and of course, death, which after all is part of life. He was a strong, compassionate man who always wanted to help others. He will be missed. We can best honor him by remembering and respecting his wish – that we not sorrow and mourn his passing, but that we celebrate his hope of eternity, through Jesus Christ, his Lord and ours.
