  		Francis Marion Stafford Francis Marion Stafford was the son of John Stafford and Calista Nott. "Francis Marion Stafford, more familiarly known as "Uncle Bud", was well and favorably recognized throughout Johnson County (, Kentucky). He was born in Paintsville on the home farm, where he resided during a long and useful life, and by great industry and good business judgement became a man of means, and owned one of the best and most valuable farms on Big Sandy, which later became a part of Paintsville."

  Education: Business; Real Estate Francis Marion called "Uncle Bud", the seventh child of John Stafford and Calista Nott, was born 15 Nov, 1838 on the home farm at Paintsville in present Johnson County, Kentucky. When he was 14 years old he was hired to log with ox teams for two cents a day. When he was 17 years old he left his father's house and went to work for himself; he ran rafts to Catlettsburg. Many times he would walk back from Catlettsburg to Paintsville to save the expense of riding. He boarded with his brother Jim who kept a hotel in town, for $75 a year. Francis Marion married Marietta Hager Lavendar 12 Apr 1860. John Stafford, Francis Marion's father, had left his land to his children, but it was bought from the heirs by his two sons, William and Francis Marion. Eventually Francis Marion bought out William, and spent his life on the land his grandfather had owned. "Uncle Bud" was a man of great industry and good business judgment, and was well and favorably known throughout Johnson County. He dealt extensively in real estate, beginning in 1858 and continuing to about one year before his death. For many years he was president of F. M. Stafford & Company with Dr. T. R. Turner and J. C. C. Mayo as partners. Francis Marion served in the militia in the Civil War. He died 16 May 1924, and Marietta died 9 July 1935; they are buried in the Stafford Cemetery on the hill back of the home place. The home place of the Stafford's, is listed in the records of national historical places. The original property of the Stafford's is now near downtown Paintsville and much of it has been subdivided into developments.
