Garnet Dell Sullivan Stafford, 87, of Argillite, passed away January 2, 2011, in Community Hospice Care Center of Ashland.
She was born March 10, 1923, in Flatwoods, Ky., the daughter of the late James Emanuel and Zerilda Nichols Sullivan.
Mrs. Stafford, a well-known local historian and genealogist, graduated from Marshall University and Morehead State University. She was a retired elementary schoolteacher and principal of Wurtland Elementary School for many years. She served in the Greenup County School District for a total of 37 years, teaching three years in one-room schools and 34 years at Wurtland Elementary. She leaves behind a legacy in the many students who were educated and nurtured under her care. Mrs. Stafford was a devout Christian and attended Argillite United Methodist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Glenn T. Stafford, in 2005. They were longtime Wurtland residents and very active in community affairs. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Glenn Sullivan, Robert Sullivan and Thomas Sullivan.
Surviving are a daughter, Doretha (Roger) Bellew of Argillite, two sons, James T. "Ted" (O'Donna) Stafford of Ashland and Thomas Wayne Stafford of Carrolton, Ga., four grandchildren, Melissa Bellew of Lexington, Chris (Anita) Bellew of Argillite, Tamara (Stephen) Schuster of Ashland and Tiffany (Todd) Virgin of Ashland, eight great-grandchildren, Zachary Virgin, Payton Virgin, Sophia Virgin, Kaitlyn Schuster, Kaleb Schuster, Konner Schuster, Taylor Bellew and Christopher Bellew; and a sister, Mabel Turner of Jackson, Miss.
