Thomas (Tommy) Len Lowry of Oneonta passed away June 4th, 2014 at his home. A beloved husband, father, and friend, Tommy was an active community leader and businessman in his hometown of Oneonta throughout his life. After graduating from Oneonta High School, Tommy had a celebrated football career at Auburn University. While at Auburn, he married Terri Bentley, the woman he had loved since the second grade. Tommy and Terri moved back to their hometown of Oneonta where they raised three children and he spent 40 years as a State Farm agent. Tommy shared his leadership and vision for the community by serving 13 years on the Oneonta City Council and volunteering for countless boards and civic organizations. He was an active member of Lester Memorial United Methodist Church where he also served in various leadership positions. It brought him great joy when he was able to give back by volunteering as a coaching assistant for the Oneonta High School football team for many years. He was an avid reader and always strived for an in depth knowledge of the issues facing his community and world. Tommy will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, his strong faith, and his integrity. He was a man of few words who knew that the best way to teach and lead was by actions. He is survived by his mother, Shirley Lowry; his brother, Johnny Lowry; his wife of 44 years, Terri Lowry; his three children, Betsy Darnall (Tommy); Cindy Lowry (Keith Tassin); T.J. Lowry (Kettia); and his four grandchildren, Erin Darnall, Gus Darnall, Sophia Lowry, and Jacob Lowry. The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 7th, 2014 at 1 pm at Lester Memorial United Methodist Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at 11 am, Saturday, June 7th at Lester Memorial United Methodist Church. Lemley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
