Elmer Edward Holmes
Elmer Edward Holmes, son of Everett (sic) and Bessie Stafford Holmes, was born November 28, 1905 at Byron, Nebraska, and died May 20, 1999 at the Hilltop Estates, Gothenburg, Nebraska, at the age of 93 years.
He joined the U.S. Army on April 13, 1942. During his tour of duty, he spent seven months in Fort Roberts and was stationed in Alaska for two and a half years. He took care of the Nurses Quarters. Later, he served int he infantry. He was stationed in Seattle, Washington, when he received an Honorable Discharge. On September 25, 1945 he was discharged. He received the Good Conduct Medal and Asiatic Pacific Service Medal.
He farmed near Republic, Kansas, most of his adulct life. he worked at the grain elevator in Republic for a short time after retiring from farming in 1960.
He was united in marriage to Lena Opal West on March 18, 1945 and to this union one son was born.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lena in 1991, four brothers and one sister.
He is survived by a son, Leslie Holmes of Fremont, nebraska, nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, three brothers, Bill Holmes of Rosamond, California, Lee Holmes of Byron, Nebraska, and Kenneth Holmes of Waco, Texas, and a sister, Velma Jones of Belleville, Kansas.
Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 24, 1999 at the Washington Cemetery, Republic, Kansas, with military honors.
