John "Jack" Stafford Vaughn, 89, of Athens Township, Pa., formerly of Seven Lakes, N.C., passed away Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. "Jack" as he was known by his family and many friends was born in Sayre on April 28, 1925 the son of Truman and Anna Stafford Vaughn. He was a graduate of Sayre High School class of 1943 and later served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Lexington in the South Pacific during World War II. Jack was employed as a draftsman for the Ingersoll-Rand Tool & Hoist Division from 1946 to 1956. In 1957, he began working in the Management & Development Division and eventually served as manager of product engineering. Jack held eight patents to his credit. Following his retirement in July of 1982, Jack and his wife Lois Wood Vaughn moved to Seven Lakes, N.C. Jack was a skilled woodworker and craftsman who operated his business, Wood by Vaughn, in Seven Lakes for many years. Jack was an avid golfer and had the extreme good fortune of achieving two separate holes-in-one. Jack enjoyed volunteering at the US Open at Pinehurst, N.C. He loved spending time with family and friends, and boating and sailing on Keuka Lake, N.Y. Jack moved back to Bradford County in 2008 to be near his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, on May 23, 2005. Jack was a life member of the Sayre Elks Lodge and was a member of Skiff-Bower VFW Post in Sayre. Surviving are his sister-in-law, Anna Wood of Athens Township; nieces, Cheryl Wood-Walter and husband, Gregory of Athens Township, Sharon VanFleet and husband Thomas of Athens Township, Charlene Wood Smith of Sullivanville, N.Y.; as well as several great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and dear friends in North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home, 314 Desmond St., Sayre, Pa. Sayre Elks Lodge will hold a Service of Remembrance at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Church of the Epiphany, South Elmer Ave., Sayre, Pa. Interment will follow in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Pa. with the Valley Color Guard according full military honors. The family suggests that contributions be directed to the Sayre Elks Lodge Antlers Youth Program, 117 S. Elmer Ave., Sayre, PA 18840 or to the Sayre Historical Society, 103 N. Lehigh Ave., Sayre, PA 18840 in John "Jack" Stafford Vaughn's memory.
