WILEY JACKSON JOHNSTON, 97, of Bland, VA, departed this life Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Heritage Hall, Rich Creek, VA. He was born in the Trigg community of Giles County on September 23, 1919, the son of the late William Tunis & Vinnie Stafford Johnston. He loved his church family at Central United Methodist Church, Bland, where he was an active member for many years. He was a World War II veteran where he served in the United States Army from July 1941 to January 1946. He loved to make people laugh and talk hunting stories and was loved by all. He was a self-taught small engine repair man and enjoyed working on lawnmowers and chainsaws.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elizabeth Stafford Johnston, his infant son, Rendell Jackson Johnston and one brother & sister-in-law, Preston & Claire Edith Johnston, brothers-in-law, Claude Galliher, Ernest Davis, Hershel Wills and John Pritt.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter & son-in-law, Thresa J. & Roscoe Perdue, Pearisburg, VA, with whom he lived for 4 years; his son & daughter-in-law, Ronald J. & Debbie Johnston, Saltville,VA; his grandson, Todd & Anita Perdue, Pearisburg, VA; his granddaughters, Tina Johnston Hamilton, Bland, VA and Casey J. & Joe Booth, Rural Retreat, VA; his granddaughter’s mother, Gayle Dillow Johnston, Wytheville, VA; his great-grandchildren, Michael & Alexis Perdue, Jessup & Jordan Hamilton, Jacob Perdue, Gabby & Conner Booth; step-grandsons, Daniel Marshall, Saltville, VA and Ben Marshall, Bristol, VA.; his sisters, Dorothy Galliher, Rich Creek and formerly of Ripplemead, Hazel Pritt, East Bank, WV and Ruby Davis, Staffordsville, VA; many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 11, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Central United Methodist Church, Bland, with Rev. Kevin Richardson and Rev. Bobby Lorton officiating. Burial will follow in the Wesley’s Chapel Cemetery, Trigg, VA. where military rites will be provided by VFW Post 6000 of Narrows and American Legion Post 68 of Narrows, Post 311 of Pembroke and Post 145 of Peterstown. The family will receive friends Saturday, December 10, 2016 at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M.
