James Stafford Reed was born in Hayesville, which was actually a part of Richland County, Ohio at the time of his birth.
On March 20, 1856, James and his brother, Jacob Reed, purchased a property in Section 31 of Richland Township, Whitley County from Henry Salsman. At the time of his death, he owned property located at "the west half of the South West Quarter of Section Twenty Nine (29) Township Thirty-one (31) North, Range eight (8) East in Whitley County."
James, along with his wife Esther and children, Sarah and Daniel, are buried in the cemetery which are across from the Spring Creek Church of the Brethern. The church and graveyard are located in Kosciusko County, just across the border from Whitley County, on the east side of county road 700E, 2.5 miles north of State Road 14. The grave site is adjacent to that of James' parents. His tombstone indicates that he died at age 65 years, 7 months and 10 days.
The obituary of James Reed appeared in the Columbia City newspaper on August 7, 1898.
