  Elmer Andrew Steffensen, 87, of Manistee, formerly of Bass Lake, Gowen, died on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, at West Shore Medical Center, Manistee. He was born at the family farm on Steffensen Road NE, Spencer Township, Kent County, on March 28, 1918, the son of Walter W. and Ethel R. Corey Steffensen. Elmer was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He wa wounded in action while serving in France and received the Purple Heart. He spent 17 months in military hospitals recovering from his wounds. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Cleveland-Wolverton VFW Post in Greenville and was a life member of Greenville Masonic Lodge 96. He worked for Gibson refrigeration Co. for 22 years and retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier in Gowen for 18 years. Elmer loved fishing, hunting and spent many years wintering in Florida. He married in Trufant on Sept. 10, 1939, to Beatrice G. Stafford. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Betty, on Aug. 4, 1961; and brother in 1992. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Beatrice; two daughters and son-in-law, Nancy and Hersey Rogers of Edmore, Carol and Don Cesar of Stanton; son, Richard Steffensen of Lansing; grandchildren, Steven Lake, Victoria and Brian Woodman, James Lake, Aaron and Lorri Lindsey, Rebecca and Tery Crawford, Courtney Steffensen, Tanya Steffensen; five great-grandchildren; and one niece and one nephew.
