I have found tonight that Charles' father was Thomas Stafford and his m other was Margaret (Hoist) Hirst Stafford. I have determined this usin g the Sandal Magna Parish records. In the records I found that Charles h ad at least 6 brothers and sisters. Charles' younger brother was named H enry, a name that Charles later used for his third son. It was also de termined in those records that Thomas and Margaret were married on Octo ber 1, 1787, entry No. 111. Thomas and Margaret were married in the S andal Magna Church by the Vicar W. Brown. Margaret was originally from t he Town of Wakefield. In one entry Thomas is listed as a Keeper, in an other he is listed as an ale housekeeper, and in several he is listed a s an Innkeeper.

I am, at this time, guessing at the birthdate based on the Sandal Magna m icrofilm that covers the area where Thomas was traced from. Thomas, if y ou figure 20-22 years of age at birth of his first born, would have bee n born in the early to mid 1760's and a record for a Thomas being born i n the Pledwick area, then called Westside from studying the records, of J ohn makes me believe that this would have been our Thomas.
March 2, 1996
I am making this entry late, however, I had learned in February 1996, t hat Thomas' baptism date was May 30, 1757, therefore the record mention ed above with John as father and the area being called Westside is defi nitely incorrect, Thomas' father is now definitely know to be Thomas a lso. I have also found that Thomas' father Thomas was also the Innkeep er and the business must have been handed over to the younger Thomas so metime between 1778 when Thomas the father died and Mary his wife had t aken over...this was seen in the Brewster Calendars records of licensee 's by Dave Bradley my hired archivist from the Pledwick area.

As a result of sitting with Dad and Ash after the 2000 England trip, we n oticed on the copy of the actual cemetary church records that it states t hat Henry Stafford, Thomas Junior's son, was "Removed" from the grave. I t is noted this way in the church records, there is no date listed and t here is note of where he had been moved (Newmillerdam).

Coincidently, the record to the right of Henry's also mentions that ind ividual had been moved, his name was Cheeseborrow. Why or where they w ere moved I am sure will remain a mystery. Also, in opposition to what I w rote above, I doubt the Henry Stafford gravesite that this Thomas and h is father are also burried in, is the son of the younger Thomas as ment ioned above. I can not be sure at this point who this Henry Stafford m arried to a Sarah really was......although it is almost certain that th ey are part of the family. One thought that I have is Thomas' father T homas did not have any children recorded from a stillborn in 1750 until t his Thomas born in 1757. I suspect that there were some other non-regi stered children from 1750 to 1757,,,,this Henry could have been one of t hem but, this is only theory.
