CECIL FRANCIS “Candyman” STAFFORD, JR., 87, of Grand Avenue, Pearisburg, departed this life Sunday evening, October 23, 2016 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. Cecil was born in Skippers, Virginia on January 17, 1929 and grew up in the Pembroke area of Giles County. He was a dedicated Christian, a member of The First Church of God in Rich Creek, a veteran of the U S Army serving in Japan at the end of WW II, was retired from the Preparation Department at the Celanese Plant at Narrow, actively worked the flea markets at Roanoke and Tazewell and and started the C & P Discount store in Pearisburg. He was preceded in death by his parents Cecil F. Stafford, Sr. and Reba Lafon Stafford, his first wife Carrie Lee Fletcher Stafford, his brothers Newton “Jack” Stafford and Billy Stafford.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Peggy Russell Stafford; his son and daughter-in-law David and Donna Stafford of Pearisburg, his daughter and son-in-law Kaye and Jerry Johnson of Pearisburg; His step-sons and their wives Marvin “Van” Fletcher and Pat of Mechanicsville and Michael and Vanessa Fletcher of Richmond; his grandchildren Susan Whetzel and fiancee, Rusty Moss, Jennifer Lauer (Nick), Beth Yopp, Christian Harry, J Fletcher, Luke Fletcher, Sherri Trenar, and Katrinda Wills; his great-grandsons Seven Whetzel, Clay, Nate, and Ben Lauer; his sisters Martha Gray of Portsmouth, and Jane Presley of Hopewell; his brother Donald Stafford of Portsmouth; and a special grandson Jon Whetzel.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 1:00pm in The Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St. Pembroke with Pastor Eddie Kendall and pastor Bernice Warner officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg with military graveside honors by local American Legion and VFW Posts. The Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke is in charge of the arrangements.
