- Education: 8 th Grade Olin was raised in a household which included his
mother , Sally, and his Uncle Luther. After he and Lottie were married she
joined this household, and from reports it was not a very harmonious one
because Sally was very domineering and Lottie was quite young and
inexperienced in complicated relationships. Olin took care of his sick
mother and Uncle Luther until they died. Olin was a tinkerer; he tinkered
with cars during much of his spare time. When he was out of work he made
whiskey to sell to friends and acquaintances to feed his family. He and
Lottie were also gleaners of food from the land. Every summer and fall
they would go into the country to old farms and gather cherries,
blackberries, apples and grapes, and sometimes pears for canning,
preserving, making jelly and jam and applebutter.
