Earl Gene Stafford, 81, of Roanoke, went to heaven a shouting, "Hallelujah!" Friday, April 6, 2012. Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Sartin Stafford; parents, Ira H. and Florence Arrington Stafford; brothers, Arnold R. and Clyde M. Stafford; sons, Mark V. and David G. Stafford; granddaughter, Mitzi A. Stafford. He had retired from the N & W Railroad after 39 years of service and was a member of the God's Lighthouse Church.
Surviving are his sons, Barry J. and wife, Gail, Richard H. and wife, Teresa, Timothy W. and wife, Glenda, and Daniel E. and girlfriend, Sandra Bugg; daughter, R. Gail Carter and husband, Joey; ten grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Flo Doyle and husband, Rev. Charles; brother, Ernest R. Stafford; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorials may be made to the Samaritan Inn, 543 Salem Ave #A, Roanoke, VA 24016-3023. The family wishes to thank the staff of Berkshire Nursing Home for their compassion and care during Earl's illness, especially, "Sherry Berry."
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Terry M. Shaw officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 9, 2012 at Oakey's North Chapel, Roanoke.
