Newland, N.C. - James Howard Stafford, 70, of Orville Stafford Road in Newland, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Mountain Home Veteran's hospital in Johnson City, Tenn.
A native of Avery County, he was the son of the late Orville and Pearl Burleson Stafford.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army and was a member of the Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harlan, Bill, Wayne and Don Stafford; and a sister, Lucille Shams.
The funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. The Rev. Cass Buchanan will officiate the services. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from 1:30 p.m. until the service hour at the church.
Interment will be in the Yellow Mountain Cemetery with military graveside rites.
r. Stafford is survived by his wife, Millie Stafford of the home; daughters, Belinda Bisbey, Darcy Thompson, and Lisa Stevens; son, Michael Stafford, all of Washington state; sisters, Betty Burleson of Bluff City, Tenn. and Marie Cook of Gastonia; and eight grandchildren.
