Black Mountain - Lewis C. Stafford passed away Wednesday February 7, 2007.
He was born on February 2, 1923, in China Grove, NC, son of the late Roy Vernon and Delphia Christy Stafford. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to Black Mountain where he has resided ever since. He was a long-time member of Mountain View Baptist Church.
Mr. Stafford was a member of the Greatest Generation, having valiantly served his country in World War II as a flight engineer in the United States Army Air Force. He was a B-17 flight engineer, flying with the 99th Bomb Group based in Foggia, Italy. His crew flew numerous missions over Eastern Europe and Germany, helping to secure victory for the United States and its allies.
After the war, he returned to work and raise his family in Black Mountain. Mr. Stafford served for many years as Sales Manager for Woodcock Ford. In 1969, he founded Stafford & Fender Motor Co. with his son-in-law, Tommy Fender. He retired from Stafford & Fender in 1981. Mr. Stafford was known for his love of automobiles. In his younger years, he enjoyed restoring antique cars and building custom cars. He also enjoyed motor sports, having raced as a hobby during the 1960's.
Mr. Stafford was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Aiken Stafford, his brothers Reginald Andrew Stafford, Thomas Grady Stafford, James Ray Stafford and Roy Clayton Stafford, and his sister Eula Lorraine Stafford. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Canipe Stafford of the home; children Elaine Stafford Fender (Tommy) of Fairview and Douglas Lewis Stafford (Rebecca) of Concord; step children Patricia Louise Elam (John) of Shelby and Yvone Marie Cantrell (Wendell) of Newland; grandchildren Katrina Fender Buckner (Greg) and Lindy Fender Yelton of Fairview, Elizabeth Stafford Whittington (Joey) and Jamie Stafford Hines of Concord; step grandchild Kimberly Boaz of Greensboro; brother Vernon Eugene Stafford of Blythewood, SC and sister Mary Stafford Slagle of Black Mountain; and seven great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
