Walter Lee Shackelford, Jr. age 79, a resident of Brookstone Retirement Center passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017 in the center. He was born June 29th, 1937 in Guilford Co., North Carolina, son of the late Walter Lee Shackelford and Lula Cox Shackelford. Walter worked in the insurance industry for many years, and served in the US National Guard Reserves. He was of the Baptist faith. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and coaching baseball. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters; Ruth Stephens and Zana Talley. He was married February 15th, 1958 to Betty Stafford Shackelford who preceded him in death January 9th, 2015. Surviving are one daughter, Vickie Mitchell and husband Mike of Thomasvillle; two sons, Ed Shackelford and wife Beverly of Thomasville, and Tony Shackelford of Thomasville; two sisters, Francis Lorene Berrier and husband Mitchell of Randleman, and Mary Irene Shackelford Isaacs and husband James of Archdale; one brother, Joseph Glenn Shackelford and wife Carolyn of Archdale; five grandchildren, Amber Rivera, Brittany Shackelford, Brooke Mitchell, Darrin Shackelford and Dustin Shackelford; six great-grandchildren, Jackson Mitchell, Orlando Rivera, Giovanna Curet, Destiny Graves, Brielle Shackelford and Arianna Shackelford. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 11th, 2017 at 11 AM in the J.C. Green and Son’s Funeral Chapel in Thomasville. The interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation 4600 Park Rd #250, Charlotte, NC 28209.
