  SPRUCE PINE – James Taylor “Cowboy” Stafford, 63, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home in Johnson City, TN, after a long battle with cancer.  He was the son of the late Taylor and Mamie Gurley Stafford. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Guy Stafford, and one sister, Helen Winger.  He was a familiar sight, riding his horse around town. He served four years in the Marine Corps, and also served in the U.S. Army for five tours in Vietnam, earning the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.  Survivors include one sister, Lena Belle Buchanan of Spruce Pine; one brother, Ray Stafford of Spruce Pine; and several nieces and nephews.  A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 25, at 2 p.m. at Pine Branch Baptist Church, where he was a member.
