(Jul 09, 2007) HUNTINGTON HERALD DISPATCH
VIVIAN STAFFORD HALL DEAN, wife of William Harvey Dean of LaPlata, Md., and loving mother of Kay Hall Sowards, died Saturday, July 7, 2007, in Heartland of Riverview. Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2007, at Beard Mortuary with Rev. Tim Halloran and Rev. Michael Lyons officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Vivian had been a resident of Heartland for three and one half years. She was born November 8, 1914, in Columbus, Ohio, and was adopted in infancy by her parents, the late John Frederick and Bertha Nunley Stafford of Logan County, W.Va. Vivian was also preceded in death by her first husband, Gory Madison Hall. Vivian was a devoted worker in the Nazarene Church as a Sunday School teacher and in the missionary society. She was a charter member of the Man, W.Va., Nazarene Church, and worked faithfully in the Nazarene Central and Walnut Hills churches in Huntington and the Hollywood, Md., Nazarene Church. In 1963 she was honored as the West Virginia Nazarene Sunday School Teacher of the Year. Vivian worked for Kentucky Central Life Insurance Company and then for 25 years with the Appalachian Life Insurance Company. She admired and respected her boss, Lester H. Smith, and her co-worker, Helen Stewart Pack, who has been a dear friend for over 50 years. In addition to her daughter, Kay, and husband, Harvey, Vivian is also survived by her son-in-law, Dr. Harry Edward Sowards; grandchildren, Jennifer Sowards Parsons and husband Jeff of Lexington, S.C., and Mitchell Edward Sowards of Columbia, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Tyler Jennings Parsons and Sean Edward Parsons of Lexington, S.C.; stepdaughters, Janette Huseman of LaPlata, Md., and Rena "Terri" Mull of Downey, Calif. Vivian so often expressed her appreciation to the staff of Heartland of Riverview of "how much they were doing" for her; so her family extends a much deserved thank you to all the staff there. Special thanks to Betty Crouch and Annabel Dayhoff for the time spent with our Mother during her passage from this life. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service on Monday, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Beard Mortuary. Donations may be made to either the Cross Roads Methodist Church or the Walnut Hills Nazarene Church in Vivian's memory.
