Marvin Stafford, 43, farmer and school bus driver residing in the Columbiana community seven miles southeast of here, was murdered in his bed while he slept about 1 o'clock Wednesday morning. Sheriff Rube M. Smith states that Mrs. Lillian Stafford, wife of the murdered man has admitted the killing.
Mrs. Stafford has been in ill health for more than four months since she suffered a nervous breakdown. It is said that the Staffords had a slight quarrel Tuesday afternoon and that it preyed upon the wife's mind, finally culminating in the crime at the early morning hour.
Funeral services for the dead man were held at Scotland Baptist Church at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. N. G. Hickman, pastor, was in charge of the services. Interment was at Scotland Cemetery.
Mr. Stafford is also survived by two sons, Edwin and Chester, and five sisters, Mrs. W.H. King, Vaiden; Mrs. Charles Pittman, Oklahoma; Mrs. Annie Pittman, Crenshaw; Mrs. Joe Odom, Noxapater, and Mrs. Guy Rogers of Stewart. The tragedy has cast a pall over the entire county due to the popularity of both Mr. and Mrs. Stafford and the prominence of both families.
***Later news articles indicate that Mrs. Stafford was found by a jury to be insane at the time of the murder, and was confined to a state hospital for a time afterwards.
There is no evidence that she was ever found to be criminally responsible. It would appear that she recovered from her illness and went on to lead a productive life.
