  Herbert was born in Cleveland, Tennessee in 1887. His family traveled to Texas sometime before 1900 by horse and wagon and that adventure became a favorite memory to share with family for many years to come. He married Ethel Stafford on June 23, 1913. Herbert was 26 and Ethel was 14. Herbert worked as a farmer all his life in Altoga, TX and Lone Oak, TX. He enjoyed sharing stories about his life and reciting Civil War poetry. He enjoyed listening to his sons play music. In their later years, he and Ethel loved spending time on their porch swing in Lone Oak and were always ready to host family and friends.
