  "They had 10 children, one of which was William who is my ggrandfather. I am not sure if I told you this story or not, but he appears to be the reason why the Staffords in Virginia and the Staffords in Attica [IN] stopped communicating. I found out about this in August 1997 while at the family reunion in Giles Co., VA. Three of our cousins were confederate soldiers and were captured during the Battle of Cloud's [Cloyd's] Mountain in Giles Co. They were taken to a prisoner of war camp in Columbus, Ohio. While there, my ggrandfather went to Columbus from Attica and met with them. He tried to talk them into signing a statement that if they were released, that they would go to Attica to live until the war was over and that they would not bear arms against the U.S. Evidently the Staffords in Virginia became upset and so the strife started.
